The Gospel of John stands out as unique among the four gospels of the New Testament. While distinct from the other three Gospels, it helps to present a far more comprehensive picture of Jesus’ life and ministry. While all of the Gospels are narratives which advance a theological vision of Christ’s life, John is by far the most theological. He frequently presents his message with a dualism of ideas such as life and death, light and darkness, love and hate. However, his testimony is that of an eye witness recalling these events and describing them to his audience under the influence of the Holy Spirit. John’s Gospel is organized around seven pre-Resurrection sign miracles in which He “manifests His glory” to the world. These signs demonstrate that He is the Christ—the Messiah of the Old Testament prophets. From the beginning of his Gospel (John l:4), to the middle (John 14:6) and on to the end (John 20:31), John’s emphatic testimony is that there is eternal life in none other than Jesus Christ. As we journey through the Gospel of John, your confidence in Jesus Christ will be strengthened and your understanding of the beauty of the Gospel will be deepened.
