Do you have to go back to go forward? Is there a sense in which the past contains the key that unlocks the present? It was 600 years before Christ that the Lord, speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, called out, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you shall find rest for your souls.” Those words have resonated in the hearts of the faithful for millennia, casting a backward glance into the ancient wisdom of the Old Testament prophets. In 1446 BC, Moses was moved by God to forsake the riches of Egypt and Pharaoh’s household, and to rise up as the deliverer of the Hebrews from their slavery in Egypt. They would stop at the foot of Mt Sinai where Moses would begin writing the first five books of the Bible, a task that would take the next forty years of his life. It was during this time that Moses wrote the book of Genesis, a monumental work of literature that he penned under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The book of Genesis became the bedrock upon which the rest of the Bible would rest, introducing many themes which would be threaded throughout the remaining sixty-five books of Scripture by later prophets. Genesis, would for that reason, come to be known as the Book of Beginnings. Early in Genesis, we find the inspired account of the creation of the Universe and of Man. Here we learn of the entrance of sin into the world and the resulting curse by God. The tragedy of sin and the curse would serve as the backdrop for the Bible’s first words about Salvation and the backlight that would illumine the merciful and gracious character of God that would be developed throughout the remainder of the book and indeed the Bible.

Finally, Genesis concludes with an extended section on the life of Joseph. It is through his life that we see the power that a single virtuous life can exert on an entire nation. We also see how God can use evil for good in saving His people. In this study, you will discover how the ancient but timeless truths of Genesis can encourage and challenge you to live a godly life for the glory of Jesus Christ.
